I can’t believe it’s November already – wow! The holidays will be here before we know it. I LOVE Thanksgiving and Christmas for many reasons but one of my favorites is the opportunity to spend time with family and friends. The holidays also usually mean special food and schedule changes which can affect efforts to eat healthy and maintain an exercise routine. If you need a little extra help staying motivated with workouts during the holiday season, I’d love to share a new app that could help – the Fitness Games App!
The Fitness Games App won the Fall 2014 Best Mobile App Awards for Best Yoga & Fitness Apps so when given the opportunity to test and review the Fitness Games App, I felt pretty excited. It’s a motivating app which allows you to select fitness routines (or enter your own) and “compete” against other users or against yourself. You have the option of competing in four areas: strength, cardiovascular, full body or cross training:
After selecting the area in which you wish to compete, you select the details of the workout. For example, in the cardiovascular area, you can choose between running outdoors, biking outdoors, swimming, rowing, elliptical, running or biking. My favorite feature are the preset workouts in the strength and cross-training areas – I want to try so many of them! They’re awesome when you need fresh workout ideas or a new challenge. When you select a preset workout, you get a list of exercises to complete. For example, this is a partial list of the exercises that are part of the “Ab Assault” circuit workout:
If I have a question about how to perform any of the exercises listed in the workout, I can select the exercise and view a description:
After selecting your choice of workout, you have the option of challenging a friend, someone nearby, yourself or a worldwide challenge. I’m not especially competitive against others but I love competing against myself to set new personal records.
What I liked: As I mentioned, I love the preset workouts! There’s a great variety and having a preset workout on my phone is incredibly handy when I’m at the gym. I also appreciated the exercise descriptions and photos for exercises that were new to me. Additionally, the preset workouts come in different difficulty levels, making it easier to find workouts that fit my current skill level (or even my energy level on a particular day). There’s a couple of ways to connect with friends (options to find friends through Facebook and contacts) which is great for people who are motivated to exercise by having social support.
What I didn’t like: Initially I had a little trouble setting up my profile but that may have been caused by a combination of user error and an app upgrade. Once I established my profile, I found the app pretty user friendly.
Ultimately, this app has some fantastic workouts. Although I’m not a really competitive person, I enjoy setting new records for myself. I love that the Fitness Games App gives me the option to compete against myself rather than against other users. I enjoy using this app and would recommend it if you’re looking for streamlined workouts (or customizable workouts), especially if competition motivates you to keep working out or to challenge yourself a little more than you would do otherwise.
What are your favorite tips for staying fit during the holidays?
