It’s a Brave New World … For My Lips

One of my resolutions for this year is to spend a few minutes doing my hair and makeup most days.  I’ve felt a little low in the confidence level lately and realized that when I take some time to do my makeup and style my hair, I feel much more confident about myself.  Please don’t misunderstand, I am a firm believer that the quality of our heart is more important than the color of our lip gloss.  I love Margaret D. Nadauld’s talk “The Joy of Womanhood” and her emphasis on developing divine qualities.  I especially this quote:

“Women of God can never be like women of the world. The world has enough women who are tough; we need women who are tender. There are enough women who are coarse; we need women who are kind. There are enough women who are rude; we need women who are refined. We have enough women of fame and fortune; we need more women of faith. We have enough greed; we need more goodness. We have enough vanity; we need more virtue. We have enough popularity; we need more purity.”

I kept that quote on my wall during my freshman year of college and read it often.  Although I believe we should “look more on the heart than the outward appearance”, I also firmly believe that I feel better about myself – I’m more confident and more willing to engage with others – when I feel like I look “put-together”.

So, back to my resolution. 🙂  In high school, I had a pretty amazing confidence boosting experience with makeup.  I’ll share it with you sometime.  I played the french horn in high school though so I never got into wearing lipstick.  I didn’t want to have to clean it off the mouthpiece.  Too messy.  I never wore lipstick in college because I felt uncomfortable with how I looked and didn’t want to draw too much attention to myself.  Today I still struggle with self confidence at times but I’ve come a long way since the college days.  I discovered my passion for exercise (especially weight lifting and running) and that has helped me feel so much stronger – in all aspects of my life – not just in the gym.

On a rather rough day, I went to the mall to recycle some old makeup containers.  For anyone who likes MAC makeup (my all time favorite!!!!), the company has a great recycling program.  If you turn in 6 makeup items (eyeshadows, eyeliners, lip glosses, etc.), you get a free lipstick.  I saved my old containers once I finish the product and when I got 6, I went to the MAC counter at Nordstrom to recycle the containers.  The saleswoman was really kind and asked me what lipstick color I wanted for my free lipstick.  I told her that honestly I didn’t wear lipstick and so I had no idea.  She took me over to the lipstick area and picked out a pretty shade called “Brave”.

It may sound kind of silly but I felt empowered as I tried on the lipstick.  Kind of like a piece of secret armor.  Since then I’ve worn lipstick at work and noticed that I smiled more, laughed with my co-workers more and spoke up a little more in office meetings.  I also tried lipstick on my date with my husband last night.  I felt pretty and put together.

So… I’ve entered the world of lipstick.  I’m pretty excited to see what happens next.  🙂
